Mike Mutyaba Reveals Reason For Second Retirement

Mike Mutyaba has announced retirement from football, again.

The KCCA and Uganda Cranes attacking midfielder has cited a heart problem for the decision.

This is the second time Mutyaba, who changed his name from Mike to Suleiman after converting to Islam, makes a retirement from football.

He suffered an injury on December 3, 2016 while in action for Express FV against Sadolin Paints FC and later announced retirement in that month.

“It has been a hard decision to stand down from the beautiful game of football for the second time,” Mutyaba told New Vision. “Unlike the first time which was a groin injury, but this time is a heart problem.”

“I started feeling bad when I lost my elder brother who was like daddy and mummy to our family. Mukiibi was the foster father at our home because we lost our parents when we were still young and took care of us as a family.

“When I received a call that Mukiibi had been involved in an accident, I was from training at Lugogo but within a second, I received another call with sad news that he had passed on. In fact, I ended up getting high blood pressure.”

Mutyaba pulled out of the Uganda Cranes team training for CHAN and was taken for a medical checkup where he was told by the doctor that he could no longer play football, hence needing an operation.

“In fact, he told me that if I had stepped on the pitch the next day, I would have died. This is the reason that pushed me to retire from the game of football, although I would have loved to play for more seasons.”

Born in 1991 to Robert Sserynjogi (RIP) and Josephine Nakkazi (RIP) in Masaka, Mutyaba’s playing career started with Kampala Kids League after impressive displays at primary school level.

He played for Bunamwaya (now Vipers) in 2008 and had a lucrative deal to play for Fulham in England fall through due to travel complications.

He joined Sudan’s Al-Merrkkh in 2012 before returning to Vipers and later TP Mazembein DR Congo. He rejoined Vipers in 2014 and transfered to Express FC in 2016 where he suffered a horrific injury.

He left mainstream football to play in the Uganda Futsal Super League before bouncing back with KCCA FC in 2018.

His first season saw him score 10 league goals and bagged seven last season in a league that was ended with five rounds to go due to Covid19 pandemic.
