Sports-bred People Seeking Political Seats In The 2021 Elections

Sports and Politics may seem poles apart – However, there are no formal rules that restrict anyone from the sports fraternity to join the political world provided he/she passes the required standards for the office.

Ahead of the 2021 Elections, Electoral Commission recently announced that there will be no mass rallies for campaigns as a means of combating the widespread of Covid19.

Sports-bred aspirants will be hoping to therefore use their fame and prominence to influence their political goals.

Here, we take a look at some of the aspirants from the sports side that are seeking political seats.

The list mainly includes sports administrators and sports journalists as well. Hon Allan Ssewanyana, Mwine Mpaka, Bernard Atiku, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi will be hoping to retain their seats.

Moses Magogo (MP Budiope East) – Who best to start with other than the current FUFA President? He holds the highest office in Ugandan football and will be hoping to add more titles to his name come 2021. Magogo who doubles as the CAF Executive member will be vying for Budiope East Parliamentary seat in 2021 where he is expected to go head to head with Geoffrey Dhanuzungu as it stands. He has been doing underground work in the region and last year, photos of an ambulance he bought for the Budiope people, leaked on the internet.

Hope Diana Nyago (MP Njeru Municipality): She no longer needs any introduction. But for our first time readers, here is the brief: Nyago is the outgoing Jinja SS headmistress, a school that has been a force in schools football and sports in general. She was the FUFA third vice president but most important of all, Nyago is the chairperson of Busoga United FC and will be hoping that her sports contribution in the region pays back with votes in Njeru Municipality.

Joseph Kabuleta (President): He made a name as a Sports Journalist. His opinions/columns with New Vision and analysis/punditry with WBS and NBS were always treated with high regard. The best ever, even fellow journalists have acknowledged. He turned into a bible teacher (read pastor) and he is the founder of Watchman ministries. A man of his word. On July 1, he wrote to Electoral Commission confirming that he will be running for Presidency and in the recent interview with Observer, he remarked: “I am standing for president and I am going to be president. I am not standing for political profile, I cannot under any circumstances withdraw from the race and I cannot under any circumstances get into a alliance unless I am its leader….. I am in this to win it; I am not in it for posturing.” He works with renown Prophet Mbonye.

Ismail Dhakaba Kigongo (MP Bugweri County MP): Another Sports Journalist on the list. He prefers to call himself a fan because of the passion he has for sports. He worked with Nation Media (Daily Monitor, NTV, KFM and Enyanda), Radio One and Akaboozi and Channel 44 for a career that started in 2007. He quit the sports journalism world two Years ago and was appointed the National Council of Sports Head of Corporate Affairs. He will be intending to serve the people of Bugweri. He has revealed to this website that he will be using the FDC card, standing in the primaries against Julius Galisonga. Dhakaba has on various occasions said that he will continue lobbying the best for Sports and a seat in Parliament will surely give him the right platform.

Baker Kyambadde Njuki (MP Kampala Central): He is known for his affiliation with Federation of Uganda Basketball Association. Baker, as commonly known, is the coach of UPDF Tomahawks that will be competing in the National Basketball League next season. He is ranked as the number one referee/umpire in Uganda and is a UPDF officer. Baker also doubles as a registrar at Gems Cambridge International School. A hot seat for him to contest but he surely have the votes from the sports world.

Rogers Byamukama (MP Masindi Municipality): Byamukama works with Federation of Uganda Football Association. He is a FUFA Exco member and Chairman Marketing, Communications and Sponsorship. He also chairs the committee for the now famous FUFA Drum, a tourney competed for by the regions countrywide. He was the chairman for Licensing committee before he was replaced by Rogers Mulindwa last year. He also represents the Kitara region. He has a rich bio outside sports as well, having worked with Warid Telecom/Airtel, Caltex Oil, Steadman Associates, Lowe Scanad, New Vision among others. He is a product of St Henry’s College Kitovu.

Denis Mbidde Ssebugwawo (MP Rubaga South): Where can we start with this gentleman? He has done it all in sports. Okay, he studied at St Mary’s College Kisubi before further studies in India. He was FUFA Vice President when he beat Taddeus Kitandwe to the seat in 2014, former head of Marketing and Sponsorship at FUFA, former Board member NCS, former Corporate League chairman, was also at Masaza Cup committee, former Deputy President SC Villa, Former President Falcons Basketball club and has brought some of the biggest sponsorship deals in Sports today. He has worked with UBC TV, GTV, Sports Broadcasting, National Housing, AAR health services etc

Sharon Adong (Woman MP Zombo): She is the former Club Spokesperson for SC Villa, the record winners of the Uganda Premier League. She was initially appointed in June 2018 on the five-member Committee for the SC Villa Elections, which didn’t happen. She is currently employed with New Vision as a sports presenter on Urban TV and worked with Paidha FM in Zombo, Her leadership traits started at Makerere University where she was the Speaker of Uganda Young Makerere University Chapter Democrats UYD the Youth league of Democratic Party. She is currently the Zombo district DP Woman leader. She is an Amumni of PYPA, Programe for Young Politicians in Africa, studied Bachelor of Arts in Social Sciences at MUK and holds a certificate in communications and Sports management organized by FUFA and currently studying Sports Management and Admin at UOC.

Geoffrey Kayemba Solo (MP Bukomansimbi South): He is a famous football agent and has engineered some of the heaviest football transfers for Uganda Cranes playeds including Khalid Aucho’s move to Egypt’s El-Makkasa. His opinion on sports, football to be specific, is taken with high regard. He is a manager for Singer Rema Namakula and has worked with Chris Evans. He has sided with Bobi Wine’s People Power and will be expected to overpower incumbent Deogracius Kiyingi.

Shaban ‘Benteke’ Lubega (Najjanankumbi Councillor LC 3): Shaban is a Sports journalist at online publications Post Media Limited (PML) where he works as a Sports Editor. He has also worked with Record Media. He was appointed Tooro United FC media officer last year in August before leaving the role. He has confirmed that he will be coming on a People Power Ticket. Born and bred in Najjanankumbi, Lubega has been doing underground work and he is optimistic to help, transform and change lives of the people who brought him up.

Francisco Bwambale (Kamwokya Councillor): One of the respected local sports Journalist. He is the Organising Secretary for Uganda Sports Press Association (USPA). He has worked with UBC and Star FM/TV, BBS TV and currently works with Record FM. Bwambale is also a Football Agent and Administrator.

Rasoul Aliga (Yumbe MP): Aliga is the FUFA finance committee chairman and Executive Committee member who represents the West Nile. Born January 1 1989, he studied at Mvara SS and graduated at Islamic University in Uganda.

Sam Kumakech (Mayor Paidha Town): Kumakech is a former CEO of Paidha Black Angles FC who played in the Uganda Premier League before it was relegated. He left his role in January 2019 to go and further his studies at Makerere University and was replaced by Fred Akena. Born August 14, 1991, he also attended St Aloysious College.

Paul Nsubuga (MP Busiro North): He is the Chairman Busiro County team in the Masaza Cup. He has promised to build a stadium in Busiro once sent in Parliament to make his county a Power house in Buganda football.

Hajji Norman Kaboggoza Semwanga (Mayor Kira Municipality): He is the chairman Kireka United that once competed in the FUFA Big League. Many commonly refer to him as “Coach”. He has served as Workers Councillor at Wakiso District local government.
