Salary Taxation Highlights FUFA, Players Consultative Meeting

Federation of Uganda Football Association (FUFA) met players (captains) of UPL and Big League in a consultative meeting in Mengo.

This is the latest consultative meeting by Federation with football stakeholders this year.

The main highlight of the meeting saw FUFA President Moses Magogo informing the players that their salaries will be subjected to taxation from URA and NSSF.

Magogo said that FUFA has received a letter from NSSF and URA in regards to the matter which will later be discussed with the respective clubs.

“The Government has officially written to us regarding NSSF and taxation for the players’ earnings. As law abiding citizens, definitely we must pay taxes but it is also important for players to save with NSSF. If we are talking about professionalism, these are some of the things we must embrace,” said Magogo.

With clubs not paying players in time, and others not paying at all, it promises to be a tough journey ahead.

Other issues discussed include league reforms, improving players status especially after an active career, status of contracts with clubs among others.

“It was a good meeting that the players presented their grievances, they gave us feedback on what had been talked about and what had not been talked about,” said FUFA Deputy CEO Decolas Kiiza.

“We also talked about football reforms, most especially the reduction of teams from 16 to 12 in the first division and also the elevation of the second division into the professional side of the game.”

Vipers star Paul Mucureezi commended FUFA initiative to organise the meeting calling it “very meaningful.”

KCCA FC captain Charles Lukwago also said that the meeting will help players on how they will improve their brands, among others.

On NSSF and PAYE, Lukwago said: “It’s the only way for us as players to get pension as players, and also being footballers doesn’t excuse us from paying taxes, we are also citizens of the country.”

“Money will be deducted on our salaries, its something that is painful now but will benefit us in the future.
