Tooro Queens WFC coach Rogers Ayesiga has called for more football academies if Uganda is to develop women football.
Ayesiga says that more academies can drive Uganda to the levels of Cameroon, South Africa and Nigeria among others.
He adds that these Women academies are needed to provide fit, understanding and disciplined players from a young age.
“We need more academies because they are of great importance especially if handled by the right coaches who have long term ambitions for players,” Ayesiga told The-SportsNation.
“If every team in Super and Elite league can have an academy to groom it’s players, then the women game would quickly transform and take shape.
“Also, we need to strengthen the grassroot competition especially in primary schools and introduce different age groups. This way, we shall tap more talent at an early age.”
Recently, FUFA deregistered all football academies in the country and put new strict guidelines for the owners to apply for the license.
The Federation, in a statement, said that the move will help to provide a safe learning environment, and also safeguard and protect children’s’ rights.
Ayesiga also added that Uganda’s footballers playing abroad should also demonstrate and show some of their achievements so as it will act as an inspiration to both the parents and players locally because many girls are restricted from playing football and many parents still believe that football is just a leisure activity.
“Those ladies playing the game in the diaspora should be able to show their harvests from the game so that others can have the urge to join football in Uganda, players are still earning peanuts here.”
Coach Ayesiga, who also doubles as the Tooro Queens founder, will see his side battle Asubo Gafford WFC in playoffs to determine the third team that sportingly qualify to the FUFA Women Super League next season.
The Women Elite league, which is the second division below Women Super League, was ended prematurely due to Covid19 – Isra Soccer Academy Women Football Club (Victoria) and Makerere University Women Football Club (Elizabeth) sportingly qualified to the top tier for the 2020/2021 season.
