Museveni Finally Gives Cagey Hint On Sports Resumption

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has reluctantly hinted on the possibility of sports resumption for the first time since a ban on public gatherings was effected in March this year.

The President, through his official social media, has said that he “welcomes” the idea of sports return without fans.

The news will be a sigh of relief to the sports-thirsty fraternity after the President earlier referred to Sports as mere Leisure – And Sports was not given even a mention in his addresses.

“I welcome the positive suggestions like the idea of sports without audiences that have been tried in other countries of Europe,” Museveni said.

“Any activity that can be opened safely, with SOPs, will be opened. I am one of the people most interested in good economic performance.”

The Sports Calendars have been wiped out for most Federations due to Covid19 pandemic while others have remained with just faint hopes of returning to action before the turn of the year.

The local Basketball season was cancelled while the 2019/20 Uganda Premier League was given a premature ending and the new season was given a tentative kickoff date of October 19.

National Council of Sports recently drafted Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Sports Federations to follow, and has since engaged the Ministry of Education and Sports and Ministry of Health.

On Wednesday, FUFA President Moses Magogo and Deputy CEO Decolas Kiiza together with State Minister for Sports Hamson Obua had a meeting with Prime Minister Dr Ruhakana Rugunda to discuss on how safe Sports can return without violating the guidelines set by the Healthy Ministry.

Low risk sports like Golf, Motorsports, Athletics etc that involve less or no contact between participants, are expected to be given greenlight first.

With fans (gate collection) the source of income for most sports disciplines, the Sports sector in Uganda is braced with a long hectic road to recovery.
