Four Uganda athletes, including Joshua Cheptegei, were flagged off on Friday at Nakasero to Monaco, France to compete at the Diamond League.
The contingent that also have athletes Halima Nakaayi, Nanyondo Winnie and Kissa Stephen, were flagged off by First Lady and Minister of Education & Sports Hon. Janet K. Museveni.
The ceremony was also attended by the Minister of State for Sports Honorable Hamson Obua, President Uganda Olympic Committee/IOC Member William Blick, Commissioner Physical Education Ministry of Education & Sports Mr. Omara Apiita, Dr. Patrick Ogwel General Secretary National Council of Sports, Special Presidential Assistant for Sports Gunter Lange and President Uganda Athletics Federation Mr. Domenic Otucket.
Minister Hamson Obua urged the athletes to be extremely cautious and careful taking into account COVID-19. He wished them all the best and reaffirmed his support.
The First Lady welcomed the delegation and thanked all the people present for their unwavering commitment to the development of sports in Uganda.
She specially thanked the athletes for their excellent performances which were globally recognized as manifested by the number of medals being won by athletes. She urged the athletes to be disciplined, act with integrity at all times and avoid temptation to use prohibited substances.
She reaffirmed her commitment to support sports and revealed that government was embarking on renovating a number of facilities that included Mandela Nambole, Nakivubo, Aki Bua and Buhinga stadiums.
Cheptegei will be aiming to break the world record in 5000m next Friday 14 August 2020.
He had an incredible 2019 highlighted by a World Cross-country title, the 5000m Diamond League trophy, 10000m world gold and the 10km World Record (WR) among others.
