FUFA Issues Financial Support to Heroic U17 Team

Football Governing body in Uganda (FUFA) has extended financial support to Uganda’s U17 Girls’ national team players.

A total of 35 players will receive $100 each, which is Sh367,000 approx, according to the information seen on FUFA website.

The timely assistance comes at a time when the country is experiencing a partial lockdown due to Covid19 pandemic.

The girls will be expected to use these funds during their personal trainings ahead of the forthcoming FIFA World Cup U17 playoffs double header against Cameroon.

“The coaches have been in constant engagement with the players, sharing training manuals as we wait for Government to lift the lockdown on sports activities,” FUFA head of communications Ahmed Hussein said.

“We believe this financial facilitation will help the players to continue with personal training as we work around plans to get the team to camp in preparation for the matches against Cameroon.

“FUFA is ready to support the team so that we realize our target of qualifying to the 2021 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in India.”

Government is yet to give Sports green light to return during these unprecedented times.

Uganda will face Cameroon in the final qualifying round of the 2021 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifiers with the first leg in Kampala slated to take place between 31st October- 2nd November 2020 and a return leg a fortnight later.

To reach this stage, Uganda eliminated Ethiopia and Tanzania in the preliminary and first round respectively.

FUFA has said that the beneficiaries of this financial support are players from the previous U17 Squads plus six new faces named by head coach Ayub Khalifa.

The Uganda Girls team won both the CECAFA and Cosafa U17 championships last year.
