Aloro On Being Dropped From CHAN Team Because Of Corruption

In 2014, Uganda Cranes technical team led by then head coach Milutin ‘Micho’ Sredejovich made a late change to the team that was traveling for the 2014 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in South Africa.

Then KCCA FC defender Rogers Aloro paved way for Nicholas Wadada who had not trained after he had sustained injuries following a motorbike accident a month earlier.

This, is one of the worst moments Aloro has faced in his playing career.

The-SportsNation caught up with the defender, and here is the interview.

SportsNation: Is the name Aloro yours?
Aloro: Aloro is my step father’s name that I grew up being called everywhere and it stuck on me since I spent less time with my real dad.

SportsNation: What else can we know about your background?
Aloro: I grew up from Natete before we shifted to Bweyogerere where I lived for most of my time but I come from Nebbi District, but we also have a family in Pakwach and Arua.

SportsNation: Tell us about your family?
Aloro: We are two in our family with my step brother Emma Owoda on my father’s side and on my step father’s side I have two beautiful and lovely sisters.

SportsNation: Why did you choose to play football?
Aloro: Because it runs in my blood and it is my passion and talent.

SportsNation: What are your memories as a kid playing football?
Aloro: Well, I started my football from Primary where I was so comfortable with my feet than boots.

SportsNation: Who did you look up to when growing up?
Aloro: I grew up locally looking up to both my dads because they were footballers as well, they were my inspiration, I always keep my dad’s name and their legacy still rising and so my legacy as well. International I used to look up to Thierry Henry and Ronaldinho, that is where most of my friends used to call me Brazilian because of my no-look passes.

SportsNation: What are the challenges you have faced playing football?
Aloro: Challenges I have faced include; politics in Football, not being valued as a player, knee injury I got at KCC, not being paid for my efforts (Salary), Corruption.

SportsNation: Can you explain more on the above?
Aloro:

  • Politics in Football, someone else is preferred to play in your position yet you are in better shape.
  • Corruption like paying money to play or being selected in the team. Corruption in a way that you can be dropped from the team. When I was dropped from the CHAN team two days to depart for South Africa and replaced by another player who was not in a better shape than I was. The act of watching CHAN on TV, yet you believe you could have been there fighting for your country.
  • Salary like when I was at Rwenshama, I didn’t get paid.
  • My knee injury at KCC was challenging watching from sidelines as my friends enjoyed the game.

SportsNation: What are your football dreams?
Aloro: My dream is play for my country and go professional outside East Africa. And help change my community my my mother as well as my family because they are all I have got and to be an idol to the young upcoming Stars.

SportsNation: What are your best and worst matches you have played?
Aloro: My best match was when I was in KCC, we were playing I think Soana or Fire Masters FC and I won a penalty and scored it in the injury time. Then also, my first game in Kenya where we beat Gor Mahia in Meru I was in Sofapaka FC in 2016.
My worst game was when in Rwenshama and we were playing against SC Villa and I missed a penalty to square the game 1-1 in 2013.

SportsNation: What are your best and worst football moments?
Aloro: My best football moment is when I won the championship with KCC two years in a row, my first call up to the national team. My worst moment is when we were beaten by SC Villa in the Uganda Cup.

SportsNation: What is the funniest moment you will never forget in your career?
Aloro: When I was showered with water on my birthday yet I was expecting a cake at UPDF FC.

SportsNation: What is the best goal you have scored?
Aloro: The best goal was the one I scored against my former boses Sofapaka FC in stoppage time, it ended 2-2 in the Kenya Premier League, I was playing for Tusker FC.

SportsNation: who are your best teammates?
Aloro: My best teammates are Tom Masiko, Brian Majwega, Ntege Ivan, Hashim Sempala, Hassan Waswa, Brian Umony, Eugene Asike, Baker Lukooya, Emery Muvuyekure.

SportsNation: Who are your toughest opponents?
Aloro: Mwisho Ngasa for Azam FC, he was fast and agile.
