AFCON Trophy Goes Missing In Egypt

The Africa Cup of Nations trophy has gone missing in Egypt.

The missing trophy is the one Egypt had won for keeps when they completed the three-peat in 2010. When a team wins an AFCON trophy three times in row, they take it for good. The Pharaohs had won it in 2006 and 2008.

Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has on Friday announced the disappearance of some of old trophies from the Association’s stores.

“As the Egyptian Football Association are currently developing the main headquarter of the association including changing the building’s entrance to a small museum for Egyptian football, the management was shocked by the disappearance of some old trophies from the Association’s store.

EFA statement

“The EFA was preparing to use those lost trophies to be part of the association’s development by showing them on the building’s entrance.

“The EFA are now investigating on the trophies disappearance to make sure that those old trophies were saved after the building was burned and stolen in 2013 when Ultras Groups invaded the headquarter or they were part of the losses that resulted from what the building was exposed to in this incident.”

Sources close to EFA have confirmed that the AFCON trophy is among the old trophies missing.

Egypt celebrates winning AFCON

EFA got to know of the disappearances as they try to build a museum in preparations for a show that will celebrate 100 years on their existence.

It was expected that the trophy was at Ahmed Hassan’s home (former Egypt captain), but he has since refuted the claims.
