Yasin Mugabi On Denis Onyango, Zambia Premier League

Yasin Mugabi is without a doubt been one of the best goalkeepers in Uganda right from his early days.

However, he has not received enough consideration for the senior national team – The Uganda Cranes.

Mugabi says that his absence in the National team fold has been due to the presence of Denis Onyango.

He confesses that the Sundowns goalie is “miles ahead of other goalkeepers.”

“I won’t say that I am in the generation of Onyango and company because it’s only Onyango who is above everyone,”

Mugabi told The-SportsNation

“Just as you know in football, there is always someone who is the first choice and that’s why it has always been Onyango in goal in every match and that’s how it is supposed to be.”

Gabis, as commonly referred by his close friends, says that he is not greatly bothered as he has also been in the national team’s ranks before, mostly with the youth setups.

“I have played in all ranks in the National Team and I was the captain as well,” he adds. “It’s just that I have not got much chance in the Uganda Cranes but I was summoned on some occasions.”

UPL Vs Zambia League

Mugabi, is currently at Red Arrows FC, a Zambian club he joined earlier this year from Wakiso Giants FC. This is his second spell in Zambia after a stint with Lusaka.

He has played for SC Villa, The Saints (now UPDF FC), KCCA, URA FC and Police FC in the Uganda Premier League as well.

Mugabi says that Zambia Premier League is more competitive than Uganda Premier League.

“Zambia Premier League is more competitive compared to UPL, the teams are strong and they have many foreign players, the clubs are financially stable. Most clubs have money than Ugandan clubs, the league signs proven and better players which brings competition in the league,” he adds.

“That is why even in the CAF Champions League, the Zambia Premier League is represented by more clubs than Uganda Premier League.”

“In Zambia, there are improved offers compared to Uganda’s. The salary is higher. And another reason is that I have played in Uganda for a many years, so I had to leave a bit.”
