Basketball governing body in Rwanda, FERWABA, has on September 12, 2020 resolved to resume the 2019/20 season under a short tournament format.
The decision has been reached following a General Assembly extraordinary meeting.
The BK Basketball National League was halted in March due to Covid19 pandemic, and after the meeting, it has been agreed that the league resume on October 16, 2020.
However, FERWABA has said that the resolutions are awaiting approval by the Ministry of Sports and the Ministry of Health.
Only Eight (of the 14) Men’s teams and four (of the six) women’s teams have been selected on performance merit to take part in the revised short tournament.
There shall be no plays, with all the games (including semis and finals) played in one game format.
“All the teams, officials and limited staff will be isolated during the competition period to protect them against COVID-19 contamination,” a statement from Ferwaba reads.
“A 3 weeks practice before the tournament will be organized with a maximum prevention measures against COVID-19 on the selected courts after conducting an assessment.”
The rankings of the best eight (men) and four (women) teams have been established using average points gained per game played “since all the teams that participated in the BKNL 2019/20 did not play the same number of games in the 1st leg by March 14th 2020.”
The 8 men teams will be split into two groups (A&B) of 4 teams each led respectively by the top 2 teams in the ranking. The best 2 of each group will qualify for the semi-finals.
The 4 women teams will play against each other in the 1st round. The ranking after the 1st round will determine the fixtures of the Semifinals (#1 vs #4 and #2 vs #3).
Both the semi-finals and final games shall be played in one game.
