Europa: Bevis Mugabi Sent Off As Motherwell Scrape Through

Uganda Cranes defender suffered mixed emotions as Motherwell advanced to the 2020/21 Europa League qualifying third round.

Mugabi was shown a straight red card to concede a penalty at the death but Motherwell scrapped through on penalties after a 2-2 draw in normal time (even after extra time) to beat Northern Ireland’s Coleraine FC 3-0 in shootouts.

Leading 2-1 in the 90th minute, Mugabi was judged to have pulled Eoin Bradley before he received marching orders as the referee pointed to the spot.

It was a contentious decision as there seemed to be minimal contact but Finland referee Antti Munukka was convinced as Doherty scored from the spot to send the game into extra time.

Despite a late heart break, Motherwell held on to send the game in extra time thanks to heroic saves from goalkeeper Trevor Carson.

Tony Watt, Mark O’Hara and Stephen O’Donnel scored their spot kicks to see Motherwell through.

This was the first red card for Mugabi since joining the Scottish side from Yeovil Town in September last year.

He will return to action on September 20 as Motherwell visit Aberdeen in the league but will miss their Europa tie against Israel side Hapoel Be’er Sheva.
