Nakivubo Stadium Construction: Ham Positive As Project Stalls

Nakivubo War Memorial Stadium Redevelopment has caused mixed reactions from the public.

Since June 2017 when the construction was started, fans and other football stakeholders were in jubilant moods after Hamis Kiggundu, CEO Ham Enterprises, promised a world class structure.

Initially, the stadium was projected to end in 2019, but a year later, the project has since stalled.

“We have resumed serious work on the stadium Construction and with more determination,” a confident Ham told the Press on Tuesday.

“We have over 1000 workers on the site and this is going to be the best stadium in East Africa with a capacity of 35000.

“It will accommodate most sports disciplines with boardrooms, hostels, world class change rooms among others. The structure is expected to end between 8 months to one year from now.”

Ham has been criticized from the day he secured the lease and for surrounding the sports facility with shopping structures which have eaten up the space for the stadium.

He came under scrutiny when he was dragged to court, being accused of using Nakivubo Stadium land to acquire a mortgage of sh25bn.

On Tuesday, he said that the construction budget has increased partly due to their pursuit to end more flooding at the stadium which was a major case before renovation.

“Its an expensive venture because its built on a wetland, we have had to strengthen the foundation and drain the area to divert the water from Nakivubo Channel,” he added.
