Uganda has confirmed a national team of six runners to compete at Nairobi World Athletics Continental Tour Gold due October 3, 2020.
The Uganda team comprise ), men – Abel Sikowo (3000mSC), Oscar Chelimo (5000m), Samuel Kibet (5000m) and women- Leni Shida (200m/400m), Peruth Chemutai (3000mSC) and Sarah Chelangat (5000m).
Uganda had earlier sent a team list of 10 runners who included Pius Adome (200m), Tarsis Orogot (200m/400m), Benson Okot (200m/400m) and Mathew Chepkwirui (5000m) but the competition organisers however considered only six.
It is envisaged that Nairobi will play host to over 300 athletes from 50 different countries during the event hosted at Nyayo National Stadium (1,700 metres above sea level).
The Nairobi Tour will feature three categories of events which include, core (200m/3000mSC and discretional (400m/800m, 1500m and 5,000m) and national (strictly for Kenyan athletes) for the one-day competition.
Apart from the World Tour offering platform to prepare for 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, the Ugandan athletes will also contest for the total prize money purse of 200,000 US dollars for top performers.
World Athletics (WA) last November launched a series of the world’s best one-day meetings outside the Diamond League.
The World Athletics Continental Tour is a series of meetings divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze classifications, with the quality of competition and prize money on offer dictating such classification.
