Cheptegei Doesn’t Need My Advice – Bekele

Legendary long distance runner Kenenisa Bekele says that he doesn’t need to offer Joshua Cheptegei any guidance as the Ugandan prepares to break his 10000m World Record.

On October 7 in Valencia, Cheptegei will be going for Bekele’s 10,000m world record which has stood for 15 years – The Ethiopian set 26:17.53 in 2005 in Brussels, Belgium.

The Ugandan athlete recently smashed Bekele’s world record in the 5000m.

Speaking ahead of the London Marathon, Bekele said that he doesn’t need to advice Cheptegei on how to attack his 10,000m record.

“It’s really difficult to comment on this for me,” Bekele said as quoted by LetsRun.

“Someone breaking the 5,000, how can you give advice on second record to attempt it? I think he [doesn’t] need advice from me.

“But the only thing, maybe someone new who doesn’t break record before, I’m willing to advise. Because maybe someone who doesn’t know before, you need to give some hint how to run for the records.

“But Cheptegei, he already runs it. No advice [for the 10,000]. Just watching.”

Recently, Cheptegei admitted that Kenenisa’s 10,000m world record is “one of the toughest in the books” but he is driving confidence from his training and recent achievements to make a mark.

Cheptegei also holds world road records over 5km and 15km.

In Valencia, he will be making advantage of the pace makers and Wavelight technology to bag the 10,000m world record.

Cheptegei will also lead Team Uganda at the World Athletics Half Marathon Championships in Gdynia 2020 on 17 October, alongside the fast rising Jacob Kiplimo.
