Chelangat, Nanyondo Shine In Hengelo

Ugandan duo Sarah Chelangat and Winnie Nanyondo grabbed podium finishes at the FBK After Summer Competition in Hengelo, Netherlands on Saturday.

Chelangat finished third behind Netherland’s Sifan Hassan and Ethiopia’s Tsehay Gemechu in 10,000m.

Her 31:06.46 time is a National record, breaking the previous best of 31:37.99 set by Juliet Chekwel on April 24, 2016 in Diecimila di Rubiera, Italy.

The achievement means that Chelangat holds two National records including the 5000m when she clocked 15:00.61 in Nijmegen in June last year.

Netherlands’ Sifan on the other hand, set a new European record (29:36.67) in the same race, beating Paula Radcliffe’s (30:01.09) but came short of the world record that was set by Ethiopia’s Alamaz Ayana at the 2016 Rio Olympics (29:17.45).

In the 1000m, Winnie Nanyondo finished second, clocking 2:40.50, behind Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon (2:32.82) while Eunice Sum (Kenya) came third at 2:41.37.

Nanyondo’s time is about four seconds behind her personal best in the distance – 2:36.13.
