The Brief – Kiboga Young (Mbale Heroes) and Kitara FC will face off at Njeru with a place to play in the 2020/21 Uganda Premier League at stake.

How Did We Reach Here – The FUFA Big League is the second division of Uganda’s football pyramid. Three teams are promoted to play in Uganda Premier League with the top two earning their promotion automatically. The third team is determined through a playoff.

When the league was prematurely ended due to Covid19, the top team in each group (Elgon and Rwenzori) – MYDA FC and UPDF FC – were promoted to UPL.

Second and third placed in each group, entered the playoffs;
*Elgon – Kiboga Young & Kataka
Rwenzori – Kitara & Ndejje University FC

The Playoffs:

The four teams were taken at Njeru for the playoffs, with Covid19 guidelines on Sports resumption followed.

After a goalless draw in normal time, Hoima based Kitara edged Mbale’s Kataka 7-6 in penalty shootouts in the first playoff to reach the final.

Kiboga Young recovered from a goal down to beat Ndejje University 3-1 thanks to goals from Jamaldine Buchochera, Brian Olega and Sula Wambede.

The Preview

Kitara FC – Hailing from Hoima, Kitara returns to the Playoffs since losing the final against Paidha Black Angels. Before the league was ended, Kitara were strong candidates for an automatic spot, sitting second in Rwenzori group with 22 points, one below UPDF FC.

The side scored 22 goals from 11 games and had lost just one game.

The stats speak volume for the work coach Mark Twinamatsiko has put in since joining the club in August 2019 from Dove FC to replace his Wednesday rival Richard Makumbi.

After needing penalties to reach the final, Twinamatsiko says that he has done his homework:

Coach Twinamatsiko – “We think that we have made corrections that we made in the previous game because today is the day for that. We are hoping to have a better game than in the semis, and having not scored, we think we can do better.

“All our players are fine, the morale is high and we have the same target. We know what we want. I don’t believe in defensive mechanism, I will not have an excuse when we lose because am the driver.”

Kiboga Young – The management of the club recently confirmed a merger with lower division side Mbale Heroes to give birth to Mbale Heroes FC. A lot of underground work has been taken to see that football returns to Mbale, a football loving region, since Mbale Heroes were relegated in 2007.

The appointment of coach Richard Makumbi in October last year signalled a big statement of intent as the gaffer has a reputation of promoting clubs to UPL including Iganga Town Council, Fire Masters, Bumamwaya (Vipers SC), BUL FC), Tooro United (former Soana) and Mbarara City among others.

Kiboga had collected 17 points from 10 games when the league was ended, four points below MYDA and with a game in hand.

Kiboga showed resilience when they battled from a goal down to beat pre playoffs favourites Ndejje, and will be the bookies favourites to earn the UPL ticket.

Coach Makumbi – “You don’t have anticipate in football, its my moto. Whoever who has come to this stage, must have been Strong. We are not going to under rate anyone, we are going in there strong like we played against Ndejje.

“The way we played on Monday shows our ready we are for this, we played a strong Ndejje side, they have recently been in the UPL and even when we trailed, I remained positive and managed to motivate my boys.”
