Zainah Stars As Hoops Beat Akon’s Ubumwe To Storm Final

Zainah Angellah Lokwamweri lived as advertised as The Hoops beat Ubumwe to reach the final of the Women’s BK National League in Rwanda.

Lokwameri garnered 17 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists in Hoops’ 69-53 victory on Friday at the Kigali Arena.

The JKL Lady Dolphins forward shot 6-10 on the field as she made her 37 minutes count.

“They came out strong, the game was really hard. We had an advantage over them because we beat them in the group stage but they were more confident than us. We are a bit of a young team compared to them who have experienced players,” Zainah told Ferwaba’s Usher Komugisha.

Hoops led the first half 31-24 but Ubumwe mounted a challenge to take the third 17-13 before Hoops outscored them 25-11 in the last quarter.

Zainah added: “We expected a fight. We kept on being composed and knew that at the end of the day, we shall make it.”

Feza Ebengo top scored for The Hoops with 29 points and 25 rebounds while Rosine Micomyiza added 11 points and five steals to the tally.

Rose Akon, the UCU Lady Canons centre, contributed 13 points and 21 rebounds in a losing effort while Georgia Adhiambo managed 10 points.

Coached by Moise Mutokambali, Hoops will now face IPRC South in the final on Saturday after the side edged APR 67-52 in the other semifinal.

Nelly Sandra Nsanzabaganwa and Nicole Urwibutsu collected 19 and 16 points respectively for IPRC.

In the Men’s division, Reg stormed the final after a 75-68 win over APR while Patriots eased past IPRC Kigali with a comfortable 88-59 win.
