KCCA and other UPL Clubs have on Thursday morning launched a campaign called #WearYourLocalJersey in a brief press meeting at Lugogo.
Express, URA, SC Villa, Wakiso Giants, Vipers SC and Police FC were represented as the clubs came out with a collective voice.
The drive targets to maximise Jersey sales for the local football clubs.
This, comes at a crucial time as Clubs struggle financially due to Covid19 pandemic.
Speaking to the press, KCCA FC CEO highlighted the need for Uganda football fans to buy local apparel from their various UPL Clubs.
“Coronavirus has had a great effect worldwide and it has greatly affected the sports industry a lot,” Anisha told the press.
“Sports in Uganda was put on hold in March and President Museveni took long to reopen as he considered it as a leisure industry.
“Our industry is not vibrant despite our football being ranked above other CECAFA regions. But the likes of Tanzania have had a higher commercial value, and that’s why you normally see players cross borders from UPL to sign for Clubs in Tanzania or Kenya, why? Because they have the ability to pay them.”
Humphrey Mandu, FUFA Deputy CEO, commended the initiative: “This is a good initiative, it’s very important to have our own because brand visibility is a key element and we need to grow our game.”
“This is the path we need to take if we are to achieve the set goals.”
