Uganda Cranes captain Dennis Masinde Onyango has highlighted challenges ahead of the South Sudan tie in the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers at Kitende this Thursday.

Onyango says that the match will be played in unfamiliar environment without fans and at an artificial turf.

The Shot stopper says that South Sudan should not be taken for granted after recent improvements.

The Cranes top group B with four points while the Bright Stars are still pointless.

“It’s never a walkover in football, the fact that they made it to the group stages shows they have the quality to play at any stage,” Onyango said after Wednesday’s training at Kitende.

“For us its all about winning and stay focus because we can never underestimate any team, because if you look back at the results that have been coming through against Malawi and Burkina Faso, shows that South Sudan are a very resilient team, they fight till the end, so we just have to take our chances.

“They are our neighbours and that makes it more difficult for us but all we need is a win. We need to go hard on them and get maximum points.”

Due to Covid19 restrictions, CAF announced that the game will be played behind closed doors.

The game was shifted to St Mary’s stadium Kitende’s artificial turf after Mandela National Stadium Namboole was turned into a Covid19 medical centre.

“Its going to be challenging because we don’t have the 12th man that is the fans, its going to be an unfamiliar environment, its a home game but its not at Namboole, its a turf,” Onyango added.

“But we need to make life easier for ourselves by winning our home games and winning away to Kenya. Its not going to be easy but we have to fight hard.

“The fans should support us from home, they should pray for us, we need them, we will miss them and we know how important they are to the team.”

Onyango come into the AFCON Qualifiers on the back of superb form at club level. He kept his third clean sheet during the DStv Premiership as Sundowns beat Cape Town 2-0 last Wednesday.
