Gerard Phiri’s goal from the spot proved to be a mere consolation for the Malawi Flames.
Lassana could have went back home with the match day ball but missed from the spot at the hour-mark.
The win puts Burkina Faso on seven points, level with Uganda Cranes who beat South Sudan.
Both Uganda and Burkina Faso have a goal difference of 3, but the latter edge the top position have scored more goals – five against Uganda’s three.
The top two teams in each group will qualify to the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon due 2022.
