South Sudan Basketball Federation President Luol Deng will coach the national team at the 2021 FIBA AfroBasket Qualifiers.
The tournament is scheduled for November 25-29, at Kigali Arena.
South Sudan received another go at the tournament after coming short twice in previous Qualifiers.
South Sudan’s chance came recently when Algeria withdrew from Group D citing poor preparations.
The group also has Nigeria, Mali and Rwanda.
“We take the opportunity that came to us,” Deng is quoted by FIBA. “We have been building and we knew about coming here about a week ago. We are looking forward to it and it is a great chance for us to qualify.”
To reach the Afrobasket finals next year in Kigali, South Sudan has to finish among the top three in their four-team group.
Deng is a two-time NBA All Star and represented Great Britain National team. He fled South Sudan at an early age.
He has played for NBA teams – Chicago Bulls, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers and Minnesota Timberwolves.
