Vipers suffer Home Defeat To Al Hilal

*Vipers 0-1 Al Hilal

SC Vipers lost 1-0 to Sudanese side Al Hilal in the first leg of the Qualifiers of CAF Champions league preliminary round at St Mary’s Stadium Kitende.

Bakhet Hamid scored the only goal of the game in the 26th minute, scoring from close range with a half volley thanks to a lapse in concentration by the Vipers backline.

The Venoms barely threatened in the first half with their only chance coming through a Watambala shot from outside the box in the 42nd minute.

Vipers dominated proceedings in the second stanza after the introduction of David Bagoole, Paul Mucureezi, Ibrahim Orit and Dan Sserunkuma.

Both Bagoole and Orit had shots kept out by the goalkeeper while Sserunkuma came a second late to miss Mucureezi’s low delivery as Vipers asked questions.

Lone striker Caesar Manzoki had a penalty appeal waived when he was tripped in the area, but he had no impact throughout in a game where he was starved of possession.

Orit had the game’s best chance when he met Mucureezi’s delivery in the area but fired over the ball with a goal at his mercy.

Mujahid Farouk almost put the game to bed for the visitors late in the game but his loop was finger-tipped for a corner by Mutombora.

Altogether, Al Hilal played with maturity and bossed possession before willingly sitting at the back in the second half to absorb any Vipers threat.

Vipers Milton Karisa was taken off in the 44th minute after failing to impress while National team ‘materials’ Karim Watambala, Dissan Galiwango and Halid Lwaliwa were some of the best players for Vipers on the day.

With a 1-0 defeat, Fred Kajoba has dug himself a deep pit to overturn the deficit in Khartoum in the return leg on December 6, 2020.

Winner over two legs face Asante Kotoko of Ghana or Mauritania’s Nouadhibou at the wnxt stage.
