Express edged traditional rivals Villa in a pulsating Kampala derby of the Uganda Premier League at Betway Muteesa II Stadium, Wankulukuku.

George Ssenkaaba scored the only goal of the game – The striker, unmarked, collected from Frank Kalanda before sending his effort that eluded goalkeeper Said Keni to find its way into the far end of the net in the 47th minute

Villa rarely threatened and were the second best on the day but almost equalised when Isaac Ogwang’s header forced Mathias Muwanga into a reflex save.

George Ssenkaaba scored the all important goal

The rivalry lacked its colour as it was played with limited fans, but Express will take all the bragging rights having picked their second win against Villa in 13 attempts.

Express FC’s last win against Villa was in April 2017 when Allan Kyambadde’s goal separated the two sleeping giants.

Villa would have had Keni sent off for an intentional elbow on Ssenyondo but referee Waiswa never spotted the incident which left the Express bench animated and furious.

The victory, second for the club after Bright Stars FC, leaves Wasswa Bbosa’s side unbeaten with eight points from four games.

The loss is the second after URA for Villa who remain with seven points from five games.

The league takes a long break until February next year as the National team begin CHAN Preparations.

Villa Fails To Show up

After their 2-1 win over KCCA, Villa looked like a team back on track. However, they didn’t put up a formidable challenge at Wankulukuku.

Both sides failed to put up a show worth the magnitude of the derby, and without fans who have been steered the rivalry, it proved to be a dull affair.

Bbosa made one change from the team that picked a draw at Mbarara – captain Enock Walusimbi starting ahead of Denis Mubuya, and he was thrown at right back but he was Villa failed to capitalise on the matter.

Express created early chances including an Arthur Kiggundu free-kick which was headed onto the post by Eric Kambale.

With a 1-0 lead, Ssenkaaba could have doubled the advantage but his loop, with an onrushing Keni off his line, went above the frame.

Villa failed to win almost every aerial duel as Ssenkaaba and Kambale both having free headers wide off the mark.

Lwesibwa could have put the Red Eagles ahead earlier but his free-kick was stopped by Keni.

Villa improved in the second half courtesy of Salim Abdallah and Benson Muhindo introduction but failed to sustain their attacks before Express held on for a deserved win.

Nicholas Kabonge freekick, at the edge of the box after Ogwang foul, went over the bar.

Muhindo came close when he beat his man down the left flank but his shot was pushed out for a corner.
