Confederation of African Football, CAF, has confirmed that outgoing President Ahmad Ahmad is ineligible to contest for another term.
CAF elections that will determine the next President of Football governing body for Africa and his executive, is set to take place on March 12 2021 in Rabat, Morocco.
Ahmad Ahmad had in October last year announced his intention to run for a second term since ending Issa Hayatou’s 29-year reign in March 2017.
However, his candidature hit a dead end when he was banned by World Football body, FIFA, for breaching various codes of Ethics.
The Malagasy, fined $200,000 and banned for five years, came under scrutiny for organisation and financing of an Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca, his involvement in CAF’s dealings with the sports equipment company Tactical Steel among others.
Ahmad Ahmad, after the ban, said that he was going to appeal.
CAF has stated hat their Governance Committee met in Cairo on January 5 and 6 to carry out eligibility checks of candidates for the positions of CAF president and CAF executive committee.
The committee has ruled that outgoing President Ahmad Ahmad from Madagascar is ineligible.
Two candidates have been authorised and these are Augustine Emmanuel Senghor from Senegal and Jacques Bernard Daniel Anouma from Cote D’ivoire.
In addition, two other candidates Ahmed Yaya (Mauritania) and South African Thlopane Motsepe have been deemed ‘admissible’ but the committee will conduct further checks before a final decision is taken on January 28, 2021.
Motsepe, who doubles as the owner of PSL giants Mamelodi Sundowns, is a top favourite to replace Ahmad Ahmad after receiving heavy backing from some of the Continent’s biggest football movers and shakers including Nigerian FA President Amajo Pinnick.
In addition, CAF has also listed candidates authorised to participate in the election of members of the Executive member.
These are: Wadie Jary (Tunisia), Mustapha Ishola Raji (Liberia), Djibrilla Hima Hamidou (Niger), Edwin Simeon- Okraku (Ghana), Adoum Djibrine (Chad), Suleiman Waberi (Djibouti), Isayas Jira (Ethiopia), Feizal Ismael Sidat (Mozambique), Elvis Raja Chetty (Seychelles), Maclean Cortez Letshwithi (Botswana), Kanizat Ibrahim (Comoros), Patricia Rajeriarison (Madagascar) and Lawson Hogban-Latré-Kayti Edzona (Togo).
Three members – Mamadou Antonio Souaré (Guinea), Seidou Mbombo Njoya (Cameroon) and Arthur De Almeida E. Silva (Angola) – have their nomination requiring additional verifications.
