Uganda Hippos beat Uganda Premier League side KCCA FC 3-2 in a practice match at MTN Omondi Stadium in Lugogo.

The Hippos, preparing for AFCON U20 Championship, led 3-0 at halftime thanks to Ivan Bogere brace and Richard Basangwa’s strike.

After coach Morley Byekwaso made overhaul changes in the second stanza, KCCA tried to dominate proceedings and were rewarded with Juma Balinya penalty before Dominic Ayella also put his name on the score-sheet.

Bogere troubled KCCA FC three-man defence while dashing from the left flank and his efforts later paid off with a calm finish after he collected from Yiga Najib to slot under KCCA goalkeeper Hassan Matovu in the ninth minute.

Basangwa doubled the lead just three minutes later with an awkward header that looped above the Keeper.

Basangwa later turned provider for Bogere’s second when he turned Herbert Achai and Hassan Musana inside out before finding the Proline striker who did no mistake after the keeper fumbled with his first attempt.

It could have been worse for KCCA who failed to contain a muscular Basangwa and he missed at close range after Matovu spilled Isma Mugulusi’s shot.

Ivan Asaba fluffed two good chances in the second half – He received in the area after Peter Magambo had lost possession in the middle of the park and he later fired weakily after receiving from James Begisa.

Hippos striker Sam Ssenyonjo, pointing guns at his club KCCA, forced Ali Mwirusi into a save before his resultant effort was cleared off the line by Samuel Kato

KCCA FC saw Andrew Samson Kigozi denied by Hippos keeper Jack Komakech earlier in the first half and Ivan Ahimbisibwe also skewed two efforts wide.

The teams will meet again for a second practice match this Friday.

Uganda Hippos will face hosts Mauritania, Cameroon and Mozambique in Group A in the forthcoming AFCON U20 Championship.

The tournament will be played from February 14 to March 4.

The Hippos, debutants at the tourney, sealed their slot after a successful CECAFA U20 Championship in Arusha, Tanzania.
