Mckinstry Picks Positives From Cranes Poor Show At CHAN

Jonathan Mckinstry says that Uganda Cranes players earned experience from playing at CHAN despite an early exit.

The Cranes lost 5-2 to Morocco and finished bottom of Group C.

The side were poor throughout and had earlier looked blunt in a goalless draw with Rwanda before a 2-1 loss to Togo earlier.

Against Morocco, the Cranes needed a win to go through. Ibrahim Orit put the Cranes in the lead but the side failed to hold on against the defending champions.

“We were pleased with the progress of the players and they have learnt a lot,” McKinstry said.

“They now know that when you get to such tournaments you take your chance. They have gained experience and will be better for the future.”

Cranes conceded an equaliser at the stroke of halftime with Ayoub El Kaabi netting from the spot inside the two added-on minutes.

Soufiane Rahmi scored a brace,
Hamza El Houssaoui and substitute Abdelilah Hafidi also put the Cranes to the sword.

Saidi Kyeyune who scored a screamer against Togo scored Uganda’s second either side of Haussaoui and Rahmi’s second.

Morocco finished top of Group C and go through with Rwanda who beat Togo 3-2 in the other game.

“Congratulations to my counterpart and for Morocco, we wish them the very best for the rest of the tournament,” McKinstry added.

“Look it was a game we always knew it was going to be very challenging. We are going to have complaints about a penalty appeal not given last night, because I saw it from my position, so it was a fair enough call.”

“The penalty couldn’t have come at a worse time. Look at the second goal, a young left back sleeps, which again is very unfortunate and then the game to get over for us. We also had a handball which was given, it doesn’t make highlights but a penalty could have been given tp us as well.”

” Look it started to get away from us when you go behind, we had three at the back and really Morocco were absolutely clinical. We gave them a couple of goals but even when you gave the ball to them in dangerous areas, they could shoot and I think they deserved the victory.”

Uganda bundles out of CHAN at the group stages for the fifth straight edition.
