Bernard Muwanga completes move to UPL leaders UPDF FC

Former SC Villa captain Bernard Muwanga has joined Uganda Premier League side UPDF FC.

The defender joins the Army best side as a free agent on a one-year deal.

He is believed to have travelled to Zambia at the end of last year to try and secure a move to one of the top tier clubs there but the deal fell through forcing him to return to Uganda.

His move to the current UPL leaders was confirmed by the club’s CEO Ashraf Miiro on Monday, February 01, along with that of four other players. The others include Eric Kibowa, Arafat Kakonge, Alex Kitata and Davis Kasirye.

“We have added five players to our team as we prepare for the league resumption. Goalkeeper Eric Kibowa, Bernard Muwanga, Arafat Kakonge, Alex Kitata and Davis Kasirye have been added to the team.” Miiro stated.

UPDF will be Muwanga’s fourth UPL team having started out at Bright Stars FC before moving to Villa and then KCCA FC.

Muwanga has had a surprising fall from grace as only four years ago, he was captain of the Uganda Cranes at the 2016 CHAN in Rwanda.

He is a big addition to the UPDF team that has already impressed this season and he adds experienced, leadership and steal to their back line.

For Kibowa, he comes in as replacement for Tonny Kyamera who was released last month after failing to secure paperwork so as to enable him play. He joins Yusuf Wasswa and Douglas Kisembo as the three goalkeepers currently at the club.

Both Kitata and Kasirye make a return to the country following spells in Rwanda and Denmark respectively.

UPDF who are coached by Kefa Kisala, have also let go of several players including Fred Okot, Kyamera, Juma Ssebaduka Najib Tusaba and Ronnie Kisekka.

They currently sit top of the UPL log with 12 points from their five games having only made a return to the top flight at the end of last season.
