Onduparaka Unveils New Jersey, Renews MTN Partnership

Uganda Premier League (UPL) side Onduparaka FC have unveiled their new jersey for the ongoing 2020/21 season.

The Caterpillars have also, together with telecommunications giants MTN agreed to renew their partnership.

The new design has the green colour retained, a caterpillar can be seen in the background and traditional African design have been applied on the shoulders.

Onduparaka Marketing and Public Relations Officer Grace Mercy Munduru says that the jersey design is themed #EmbracingOurHeritage

Munduru adds that the design is reflection of the club’s 10 years Journey “and looking at what has made us who we are.”

Onduparaka was formed in October 2011 by then MUBS graduates Joe Erema and Benjamin Nyakuni.

Partnership With MTN

The two parties – Onduparaka and MTN Uganda – have been in close association ever since the club was promoted to the top tier in 2016.

The new deal was signed on Tuesday, February 02 at Hotel Africana.

“We are honoured to renew with MTN Uganda, a partnership that we have enjoyed over the past 4 years,” Mercy Munduru adds.

“We are honoured that at such a time where the footballing sector has been affected that MTN has chosen to still continue with the Partnership with us.

“We’ve since moved from Sponsorship to Partnership because there’s alot more that is mutually beneficial for us as Onduparaka Football Club and also for MTN Uganda.

“We are happy that the partnership comes at a time when we are getting back to the footballing season, we are looking forward to using this partnership to motivate our Performance even on the pitch and also to give MTN Uganda a value for the generosity they’ve extended.”

The previous deal between the two was a one-year understanding worth UGX 300m that was signed in June 2019.

Having expired last year, it seems MTN liked how things transpired and that is why they are choosing to continue their association with the Arua based side.

MTN Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Sen Somdev didn’t reveal any financial value to the deal.

“This is a partnership not a sponsorship. Its a living relationship,” Somdev said.

“As MTN, we have always supported Sports in Uganda, Football is the largest sports in the country.

“Onduparaka has passionate fans, one of the fast growing teams in Uganda and we want to support them to succeed.

“With Covid19, the paradigm of football has changed, its not just about the partnership but we want to build not only the club but also do a lot of stuff for the spectators. We know that the fans are not allowed in the stands so we want to see how we can bring that digital engagement for the fans.”

There will be Digital challenges to be played by the fans on social media and TVs.

Somdev said that MTN Uganda will extend there assets like Mobile Money, Data among others to spectators.

Onduparaka is one of the most followed clubs in Ugandan football in both the media and during matches.

They have enjoyed reasonable success ever since promotion to the top tier and consistently finish in the middle of the table.

As of today, they sit seventh on the UPL log with eight points from their opening five games of the 2020/21 season having won twice, drawn as many and lost only once.

Last season, they finished 8th with 31 points from 25 games before the league was ended prematurely due to the COVID-19 global outbreak.
