AFCON U20: Uganda Hippos Beat Mozambique To Get Off The Mark

Monday, February 15
*Uganda Hippos 2-0 Mozambique

Uganda Hippos beat Mozambique 2-0 to get their AFCON U20 Championship campaign off to a flying start at the Stade Olympique in Nouakchott in Mauritania.

Second half goals from Derrick Kakooza and substitute Steven Sserwadda sent the Hippos top of Group A, level with Cameroon who beat hosts Mauritania 1-0 on Sunday.

Playing at the tourney for the first time, Morley Byekwaso’s side were the better side on the day and deservedly took the lead when Aylton Messias handled the ball in box for the referee to point to the spot in the 55th minute.

Kakooza calmly sent the keeper the wrong way to put the Champions of CECAFA into the lead.

At 1-0, Uganda had chances to double the lead but Isma Mugulusi’s penalty claim was waved after he was brought down in the forbidden area while Kakooza headed wide off the post after a neat cross from the right flank.

Substitute Sserwadda, on for Ivan Bogere, fired in with his shot hitting the inside of the crossbar after the Mozambicans failed to deal with Najib Yiga’s cross for Kakooza to set the KCCA FC starlet.

The Hippos will return to action on Wednesday 17th February against Cameroon before their last group game against hosts Mauritania on 20th February 2021.

Uganda Hippos XI – Jack Komakech (G.K), Gavin Kizito Mugweri, Azizi Kayondo, Musa Ramathan, Kenneth Semakula, Bobosi Byaruhanga, Najib Yiga, Isma Mugulusi, Derrick Kakooza, Ivan Bogere, Richard Basangwa
