AFCON U20: Uganda Hippos Learn Quarterfinal Opponent

Uganda Hippos have learnt their fate at the ongoing AFCON U20 Championship in Mauritania.

The Hippos finished second of Group A to reach the quarterfinal on their debut tournament thanks to a 2-1 comeback victory against hosts Mauritania in the penultimate group game.

Consequently, they will now face Burkina Faso in the quarters due 26 February 2021 at the Stade Municipal de Nouadhibou.

Burkina Faso finished top of Group B courtesy of a hard fought 1-0 win against Namibia on Sunday.

Substitute Kouame Botue scored a 90th minute header to send Burkina Faso through, Central Africa Republic came second thanks to their 2-1 stunning victory over Tunisia who settled for third place while Namibia finished bottom.

Burkina finish the group with seven points – They drew goalless with Tunisia in the opener before silencing Central Africa Republic 3-1.

To qualify for AFCON U20, Burkina Faso were beaten finalists in the WAFU-UFOA Zone B Qualifiers courtesy of victors Ghana but had booked a place to Mauritania thanks to a 4-1 win over Ivory Coast in the semis.

Burkina Faso will be the favourites against Uganda – This is their fourth appearance on the stage and clinched fourth place in 2003.

If Uganda progress past Burkina Faso in the quarter, they will face winner between Central Africa Republic and the second runners up in Group C at the Stade Olympique in Nouakchott in the semis.

The tie against Burkina Faso, will come about a month before the senior national teams of both sides clash in Kampala in the 2021 AFCON Qualifiers (March 24).
