UPDF FC returned to winning ways thanks to a 2-0 victory against Mbarara City in a league game played at Bombo Military Barracks.

Brian Kalumba and Brian Kayanja scored a goal each in the second half to hand the Army side their first win in 2021.

Its a breath of fresh air for coach Kefa Kisala whose side had lost three on a trot since the league returned from the CHAN break recently.

UPDF could have won by a better goal-margin but goalkeeper Mohamed Ssekeba saved Simon Mbazira’s penalty and kept out a subsequent rebound from Kalumba.

The referee, Abdul Ssemeere, had pointed to the spot after Ibrahim Magandazi handled the ball in his area.

At restart, Kalumba benefited from Kayanja’s poor shot on goal to slot home the opener.

Kayanja doubled the lead when he strolled through Mbarara City defence before firing low into the net in the 70th minute.

Alex Kitata saw his diving header from Ruben Kabuye cross fingertiped by Muhammed Ssekeba.

The Visitors missed a couple of chances, with John Adriko shooting wide while Jude Ssemugabi’s effort was deflected into the corner after he was put through by Bebe Swalik.

Makueth headed in Ssemugabi’s way but the lanky forward, unmarked, shot over the bar with a clear goal at his mercy.

Makueth, from a tight angle, akso forced the keeper into a low save on his near post.

The victory ends UPDF FC’s poor spell that had seen the earlier pace setters lose three games in a row. They move to 15 points leap frog Villa in fourth.

Mbarara City remain 12th with seven points.

What Next – UPDF will be visitors against SC Villa at Bombo on February 27 while Mbarara City host Kyetume in Kakyeka Stadium on the same day.
