Preview – Venoms out to reclaim top spot

Vipers will head into Saturday’s game hoping to return to the top of the Uganda Premier League standings.

After Express’s victory over Wakiso Giants FC on Friday, Fred Kajoba’s side will start the day in second place, just a single point adrift of the Red Eagles and a draw or victory will take them back to the summit.

Since the league resumed this month, the Venoms have been in excellent form, winning three and drawing the other of their four games.

The only concern is that the draw came in their last away game to Kyetume FC, one that required them to come from behind twice.

However, they are coming off two successive victories against Police FC and BUL FC and that should give them enough confidence ahead of the game.

With a favourites tag weighing heavily on their tag, Vipers know that they need to take care of Onduparaka.

Of late, they have been grinding out results, scoring in the last 15 minutes of the games against Police and BUL and they will want to start better against a side that is also eyeing all three points.

Onduparaka, come into this one on the back of a disappointing 3-1 loss away to Police FC earlier in the week.

That defeat was only their second of the campaign and it put a halt on a six match unbeaten run.

The Caterpillars are usually hard to beat in Arua and having beaten Kyetume 3-1 the last time they were at home, they will fancy their chances against Vipers.

The win against the Slaughters was their first at the Green Light Stadium this campaign, having drawn all of the opening three fixtures there.

Starting the day in 7th, Onduparaka can climb as high as 4th with victory but it will be a tough task as they come up against a Vipers side that is yet to taste defeat this season.

Onduparaka are currently 7th on the log.

The Stats

This will be the 9th league meeting between the two sides since they first met in November 2016.

In the first eight match ups, Vipers have won four, Onduparaka one with the other three all ending in draws.

Onduparaka’s sole victory against Vipers came in the very first meeting in 2016 when the Caterpillars ran out 1-0 victors.

Vipers are currently on a seven game unbeaten run against Onduparaka (W4 D3).

This fixture has never produced an away victory with all the five wins belonging to home teams.

All of the last three games between the two sides, in Arua, have ended in a scoreless draw.

Last season, Vipers took four points off Onduparaka courtesy of a 1-0 win at Kitende and 0-0 draw at the Green Light Stadium.

This fixture has seen both teams score on only one occasion, in the 4-1 Vipers victory on 07/05/2017.

The last three games between these two sides have produced just a single goal.
