Rukare Calls For Unity As UOC Ushers In New Executive Board

New Uganda Olympic Committee President Donald Rukare has called for unity as the new Executive board was ushered in.

Rukare and his Executive board for the period of 2021-2024 was officially confirmed during the UOC Annual General Meeting on Saturday.

The Elective AGM was held at the UOC offices in Lugogo with NCS General Secretary Dr Patrick Bernard Ogwel, Members federation heads and media present.

“Top on the agenda will be a review of our strategic plan 2021-24,” started Rukare who doubles as the NCS chairman.

“In my manifesto, I had talked about four pillars including support to athletes, officials and federations, Building and enhancing strategic partnerships with various partners among others.

“I would like to say that we thank you very much, we are looking forward to working with all of you as we take sports made in Uganda forward.

“As I said in my earlier remarks, we welcome an open dialogue, we will keep the doors of UOC open because we welcome all kinds of ideas, we may not be on the same page but we respect everyone’s view. Together we will move the sport forward.”

Rukare replaces outgoing William Blick who has been at the helm since 2012 when he replaced Rogers Ddungu.

He asked the members to remain as a family, and keep the eyes on the prize which is moving the sport forward.

He added: “We must work towards actualization of the athletes dreams because we are all there for the athletes and we need to work in that direction.”

During the AGM, Blick rewarded four officials with the Order of Merit Award for their dedication and commitment – Hajji Salim (Weightlifting), Madam Sheila (Handball), Coach Yayiro (Rugby) and Mahaba Muwonge (Cycling).

Rukare takes the seat unopposed, among other positions on board beside the two board member positions (Men).

Nasser Sserunjogi and Godwin Kayangwe completed the executive board positions after beating Simon Peter Komakech and Richard Asiimwe.

Did you know – The UOC acts as an agent of the International Olympic Committee and Commonwealth Games Federation in Uganda to uphold and promote Olympic and Commonwealth ideals to its affiliates and stakeholders by providing support, guiding policy and delivering programmes through its organs and structures.
