SC Villa put up a spirited performance to overcome Bright Stars FC 2-1 at Kavumba on Wednesday.

An own-goal by Benson Wangima and Nicholas Kabonge’s second half strike did the trick for the Jogoos while Joseph Akandwanaho had earlier equalised for the hosts.

As early as the 6th minutes, Fred Agandu sent a cross into the area which rattled the far-post before bouncing off the back of the Wangima and into the net to put Villa in the lead.

A minute later, Akandwanaho capitalized on miss communication in the Villa defence to poke home from inside the area after Jogoos’ custodian Meddie Kibirige failed o hold onto a routine ball.

With the game evenly poised, substitute Nicholas Kabonge grabbed the headlines as he pounced on a lose ball after Wangima had expertly saved Muhammad Ssenoga’s header, poking into an empty net.

The Jogoos looked to be the better side and consistently troubled the Stars’ defence but the lively Ronald Olaki could not add his name onto the score sheet.

He shot weakly at Wangima while in a good position, in the first half, before heading straight at the custodian.

Off a telling through-ball from eventual Man of the Match Ronald Ssekiganda, Olaki shot straight at Wangima and Ssenoga was unlucky to see his rebound bounce off the chest of Warren Buule.

Akwandwanaho was the host’s most lively player but when presented with a late chance, he poked his effort wide from just inside the area.

In the end, Villa held on to register three points that see them move to 25 for the season. They however stay in 7th, level on points with both Police FC and UPDF but with a lesser goal difference.

For Bright Stars, they stay in 10th with 17 points.
