We Were Unlucky – Mubiru On Draw Against Burkina Faso

Uganda Cranes coach Abdallah Mubiru says that his side was unlucky not to pick maximum points against Burkina Faso.

The Cranes were held at home to the Stallions in a Matchday five fixture of the AFCON Qualifiers at St Mary’s Stadium in Kitende.

The result saw Burkina Faso qualify to 2021 AFCON finals while the Cranes will need at least a draw against Malawi to seal a third straight return to the Continent.

The Cranes, started slowly but an improved second half saw substitute Ibrahim Orit denied by the woodwork while Joseph Ochaya and Farouk Miya both came close.

“We were unlucky, I feel we could have won, but we accept the result, nothing happens without God’s decision,” said Abdallah Mubiru.

“The boys put up a good performance, we tried our level best but mathematically we already knew it won’t end here and we still needed to secure point away. I feel happy with a point. We will be back to the drawing board.”

This was the first competitive game for Mubiru as the head coach after FUFA asked coach Jonathan Mckinstry to step aside.

His immediate assignment will be helping Uganda qualify to Cameroon and has stressed that he will go all out for a victory in Malawi.

He stated: “You can’t go away to play for a draw, we are going all out, its going to be total football, it will not be easy but we have to pray as well.”

Orit, Moses Waiswa and Fahad Bayo were introduced in the second half, with Abdul Lumala, Mike Azira and Patrick Kaddu paving way.

The coach is expected to ring changes to the team that will play in Malawi. When asked to comment about the matter, he said that its hard to predict the changes at the moment but stressed that he has to select a better team on the day.

As he had said earlier, Mubiru refused to blame the late arrival of players for failure to squeeze out a needed win.
