Mbale Heroes reached the round of 16 in the Uganda Cup after they beat Gaddafi FC 4-2 on penalties in a game played at the Mbale Municipal Grounds on Sunday.
The tie had finished all square after two games thanks to Musa Mulanda’s first half goal in the second leg.
Joel Madondo’s lone goal was the difference between the two side when they first met in Bugembe in the first leg.
From the first whistle, on Sunday, the home side piled on pressure in search for a goal.
With the possession on their side, the home side were the first to threaten but Edmond Wamboka’s effort went wide.
On 16 minutes, Malunda gave the hosts the lead after the visitors failed to clear a long throw-in from Kibumba Ibrahim.
Moments later, Gaddafi could have also levelled matters on the afternoon but Mbale Heroes goalkeeper Hatimu Hilbert was at full stretch to palm away Patrick Gonahasa’s effort.
After the recess, the visitors’ goal keeper Didi Mohammed, who was busy throughout the evening, was called into action again as he saved from Brian Oyela.
With eight minutes left on the clock, it was Didi again in action, this time saving a Ronald Mugwali effort for a corner.
With 90 minutes ending 1-0 in favour of Mbale, it meant that penalties had to be used to separate the two sides.
Mbale won the shoot outs 4-2 to reach the last 16 of the Cup for the first time in over a decade.

In their next assignments, Gaddafi FC will host Black Power FC at the Kyabazinga Stadium while Mbale Heroes welcome Arua Hill SC.
