Namuwongo Blazers marked their first top flight appearance with a stunning 71-66 victory against seven time defending champions City Oilers as the League got underway at KIU court in Kansanga.

In a game that pitted together two potential finalists, it was Nam Blazers who took the bragging rights.

The Newcomers, under coach Stephen Nyeko Escodata, lived as advertised thanks to Paul ‘Mgyver’ Odong who contributed 22 points to the winning effort.

Chris Omanye and Daniel Najja Juuko who was facing his former side, scored 11 each while David Deng Dikong added 8 points and 10 rebounds in a commanding performance.

Francis Azolibe was the other Nam Blazers star facing his former side; scoring five points and as many rebounds.

Jimmy Enabu (22) and James Okello (10) were the only two players to score in double digits for the defending champions.

New signings Caesar Kizito and Joseph Ikong had 8 each while Mike Makiadi managed six points.

Oilers got off the block to take a 17-6 lead in the first quarter but were blown out in the second as Nam Blazers took a 29-24 halftime lead.

Oilers cut the lead by two points after the third quarter, 52-50, but Nam Blazers edged the last quarter 19-16 to take a home a 71-66 win.

Blazers out rebounded Oilers 42-38 despite making 22 turnovers to Oilers’ 16 on the evening.

They shot 20-of-39 from the field on their way to a perfect start.

Denis Balungu scored 19 points while Henry Okoth and Faisal Aden had 13 each as KIU Titans eased past Betway Power, 91-66, who had debutant Salim Kisilu scored 19.

Wilson Otweyo’s 14 points lifted KCCA Panthers past Ndejje Angels in a 70-56 victory.
