Helen Baleke has received enormous support from Betting company Betway Uganda.
Baleke who won a Bronze medal at the 2019 All Africa Games in Morocco, has been struggling to make ends meet.
The 33-year-old lives in the Katanga slums where she survives with her children and mother.
She had used allowances and bonuses from the boxing fights to start a tailoring school, empowering 36 women who had all fallen on hard times over the last year as the Covid 19 pandemic spread.
However, the project failed to take off after her landlord impounded most of the equipment due to accumulation of rent arrears during the Lockdown.
Recently, her photo and videos in a flooded house went viral on the internet.
Its upon that background that Betway Uganda came to her rescue with four industrial Juki sewing machines her Boxing and Empowerment Group.
“I am happy to be in Katanga to help Helen Baleke, she is a hardworking woman, we saw her touching story in the press, and we thought it necessary to help,” said Betway Uganda Country Manager Adelah Agaba.
“We have given her a net not a fish so that she can go fishing on her own.
“She will use these machines to sustain herself and the Women in her group. We could have done better like building a house but its not sustainable.
“We are happy as Betway to extend an helping hand and we are sure that this will help her going forward. Please Helen, use these machines wisely so that you can early a living.”
Baleke was pleased for the timely support and commended Betway Uganda for a giving heart.
“When I was told that people from Betway are coming to visit us, I thought it was a joke and I didn’t take it serious much as I kept thinking about it, even getting sleepless nights sometimes,” Baleke said.
“We are really grateful for this support because it boosts our business and motivates us to
keep working hard and believing in God that people with good hearts still exist.”
The donation is the latest effort to give back to
communities across Uganda from Betway. They have extended support to underprivileged communities in Naguru among others.
