Men’s Africa Club Volleyball Championships
Swhely (Libya) Vs Nemostars (Uganda)
Uganda’s representatives at the on-going Men’s Africa Club Volleyball Championships, Nemostars VC are seeking to write history when they take on Libyan side Swhely in the quarter finals of the biennial tournament on Friday in Tunis.
The Six time Ugandan Volleyball Championship have been shrouded with sheer adversity of financial constraints but that has not deterred them to compete favourably.
Under the stewardship of Coach-player George Aporu, Nemo finished runners-up in Group C with five points behind Tunisian side Kelibia to progress to the quarters for the second successive campaign.
Coincidently, they also played Libyan side Al Benghazi in the 2019 edition with the latter knocking out the former.
Nemo ended up finishing sixth, the best placement ever attained by a Ugandan team at the coveted tournament.
“We have been progressively improving our play.” Power attacker and Skipper George Aporu said.
“I know we shall win this game. I have been saying it since we qualified for the quarter finals.” Aporu, an accountant by profession, added.
The debilitating nerves and malaise that come when playing against Arab opposition is also not an issue having played Tunisian Kelibia in the group stages, according to Aporu.
“The anxiety that comes with playing against Arab teams is sorted. If we put our basics under check, we will win this game.” Aporu added.
The Ugandans risked to be thrown out of El Mouradi Hotel for failure to pay$ 50 (Shs 170,000) for each player to Carter for food and accommodation.
However, Lakhani Auto Centre offered a timely shot in the arm when they supported Nemo with $1,000( Ugs Shs 3.6m) on Wednesday.
The side travelled without head coach Andrew Okapis and with just 10 players, two shy of the 12 quota.
