CAF Gives Uganda Green Light To Host World Cup Matches At Kitende

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved St. Mary’s Stadium in Kitende as one of the stadiums that can host World Cup games.

This was announced on Monday, May 03 when the continent’s football governing body released a list of stadiums that can host World Cup qualification matches.

The move comes as relief for Uganda who were understood to have been seeking alternatives after Mandela National stadium in Namboole, the Cranes home for the last 25 years, was deemed as unfit to host World Cup games.

The State Minister for Sports Hon. Hamson Obua had also stated that Kitende is ineligible for the game, forcing Uganda to consult Tanzania about the availability of their national stadium.

However, it is now expected that they will opt for Kitende after it was given the go ahead.

Uganda used the same venue as their home for their final two home games in the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after Namboole was designated as a COVID-19 centre.

Uganda is attempting to reach the world cup finals for the first time in history.

The Cranes are in Group E of the Qualifiers alongside Mali, Rwanda, and Kenya.

They will take on Kenya in their first game at the Nyayo International stadium on June 8.

The Cranes first home game will be against Mali on June 12th.

The 10 group winners will be paired in twos so as to face off in two-legged affairs to determine the five nations that will represent Africa in Qatar 2022.
