Lady Doves Wait On Ikwaput Fitness Ahead Of Final With UCU

Wednesday, May 5
*3rd Place: Kawempe Muslim Vs Uganda Martrys, 9am
*Final: Lady Doves Vs UCU Lady Cardinals, 12pm

Lady Doves are anxiously waiting to see if their star striker Fazila Ikwaput will be fit for Wednesday’s FUFA Women Super League final with UCU Lady Cardinals.

Ikwaput was taken off inside the first half of the team’s 1-0 semifinal win over Kawempe Muslim and she is a major doubt to feature in the mouthwatering final at FUFA Technical centre in Njeru.

Her seven goals, including four against Isra Soccer Academy in their opener, has dragged the Masindi based team to the final.

However, Lady Doves Assistant coach Rajab Busingye says that they had already prepared for such moments.

“Before we came here, we had anticipated that she may be out at a certain stage so we prepared for it. We trained for about four days without her. We have told every player who step on the pitch to always give her best,” said Buyinza.

Ikwaput scored two goals as Lady Doves recovered from a goal down to beat UCU in Group B earlier and will be hoping to repeat such heroics.

Buyinza added: “Its good to be in the final, we sat down and laid a plan and am happy that the players have followed the instructions.”

Repeat Of 2019 Final

In June 2019, UCU Lady Cardinals beat Lady Doves 2-0 to win their first ever league title.

Then, Hassifa Nassuna and Maureen Kinavudori were on target in a final played at Lugogo.

Goalkeeper Daizy Nakaziro, Adrine Birungi, Madam Christine, Gladys Nakito and Reticia Nabbosa are some of the players who played that final and are still at Lady Doves at the moment.

UCU will be hoping that history repeat itself as they target a second straight league title after last season was declared null and void.

They will bank on tested striker Nassuna but the number 10 is yet to hit her top gear despite having scored three goals.

UCU coach Simon Asiimwe briefly commented: “We thank God we are in the final, its really important for these players to be here as we thought we will not play again.”

To reach this stage, UCU topped Group B with nine points – They beat She Corporate, Isra and Olila before falling to Lady Doves.

The Mukono based side eliminated Uganda Martyrs at the semi thanks to Jauhara Nabaggala only goal of the game.
