Muslim faith Sand Cranes members celebrated Eid al-Fitr at their training camp in Njeru as the national side intensified preparations for the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations.
Uganda will be making their maiden appearance at biennial tournament slated for May 23th to 29th of the same month in Saly City, Senegal.
Coach Salim Muwonge’s charges entered residential camp on Sunday albeit not at full house.
Pivotal faces Godfrey Lwesibawa of Express FC and URA FC’s Brian Nkuubi were reportedly not released by their respective clubs.
Of the 16 summoned players, coach Salim Muwonge will trim down the traveling contingent to the best 12.
Focus has been on player fitness and endurance, according the gaffer.
“Our emphasis is player fitness and endurance since many players have been inactive,” said Muwonge.
Placed in Group A that has hosts Senegal, DR. Congo and neighbours Tanzania, Sand Cranes skipper Meddie Kibirige is unfazed by the complexity of the group.
“We are confident that we can win all our group games. Kibirige who turns out for reigning Uganda Beach Soccer League champions St Lawrance University said.
“We know Tanzania players by name and if they bring the same team at a neutral venue, they are finished.”
Being the man whose bicep the captain armband will rest, Kibirige opted to forgo his SC Villa commitments in the Uganda Premier league when Sand Cranes duty called.
