Ronald Ssekiganda scored a late header to ensure SC Villa held Vipers to a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their Uganda Cup last 8 clash at Kitende.

Vipers looked to have snatched the victory after Lawrence Tezikya rose highest to meet Bobosi Byaruhanga’s cross with 10 minutes to play but in similar fashion, Ssekiganda headed in from close range to level matters deep into additional time.

The goal may prove vital in the tie as Villa now need to hold onto a scoreless draw to go through while are required to score if they are to stand any chances of reaching the last four.

For most of the game, Vipers were without a doubt the better side as Villa sat deep and tried to defend for a draw.

The Venoms who started with the same team that defeated Bright Stars FC in their last League game, created several openings in the first 45 minutes but could not find a breakthrough.

Geoffrey Wasswa cleared off the line as Manzoki tried to squeeze an effort through the legs of Martin Ssenkooto, Byaruhanga sent a corner onto the woodwork before sending a volleyed effort wide.

In the second half, Ssenkooto pulled off two brilliant stops to first, save from a Manzoki header and then one-handedly push away Karim Watambala’s fierce drive from just outside the area.

When Yunus Ssentamu sent a header over while inside the six-yard box, it looked like the game was headed for a 0-0 draw only for Tezikye and Ssekiganda to strike late for their respective sides.

Villa who went into the game off a first-league victory in 11, barely asked questions of the Vipers defence and Nicholas Kabonge’s tame effort in the first half was their only sniff on goal until Ssekiganda’s header.

The two sides will face off again in the second leg on Wednesday, June 02 at Bombo Military Barracks Stadium.
