Uganda’s senior national basketball team, the Silverbacks, have learnt their possible opponents at the coming 2021 FIBA Africa Championship.
The draw for the Men’s basketball tournament, due August 24 to September 5 2021, was held on Friday.
Uganda is yet to secure their ticket at the finals that will be held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The second window of Group E games are still pending after FIBA discovered five positive Covid19 cases in the Silverbacks camp.
Grouped against Egypt, Morocco and Cape Verde in the qualifiers, FIBA rescheduled Silverbacks’ three remaining games between June 15 to July 15 at a venue yet to be comfirmed.
The Silverbacks, who will play already qualified Egypt, Morocco and Cape Verde, need just one win to book a ticket to Rwanda for a third straight qualification.
If that comes to pass, the Silverbacks will be pitted in either Group A of Group D of this year’s Afrobasket.
After Egypt sealed the top seat of the qualification Group E, the team that finishes second in the Group will be pooled in Group A while the team that finishes third will be pitted in Group D.
Group A has hosts Rwanda, 11-time record champions Angola and DR Congo.
If Silverbacks finish third, they will rub shoulders against Five-time winners Senegal, 2007 beaten finalists Cameroon and Luol Deng’s debutants South Sudan.
Group A – Rwanda, Angola, DR Congo, 3rd Group E
Group B – Tunisia, Egypt, Central Africa, Guinea
Group C – Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Mali, Kenya
Group D – Senegal, Cameroon, 2nd Group E, South Sudan
