Uganda’s National Beach Soccer team, the Sand Cranes, are one win away from securing a World Cup place.

The Sand Cranes face off with Mozambique on Friday in the semifinals of the 2021 Africa Beach Soccer Cup of Nations.

Playing at the Continental stage for the very first time, Uganda managed to reach the knockout after securing a second-placed finish in a three-way Group A.

Despite falling 5-1 to hosts and defending champions Senegal in the group A opener, the Cranes edged neighbours Tanzania 4-3 in a thrilling game.

Isma Kawawulo bagged a brace while Emmanuel Alex Wasswa and Swalley Ssimbwa lifted Uganda to the finish line.

However, they had to wait for the last Group A game between Tanzania and Senegal to determine their fate. The hosts won to ensure that Tanzania finish bottom of the group without a point as Cranes finished second on three.

“We are ready to face Mozambique. We have planned for them to counter their strong and weak areas. The players are determined to give 100 percent in the game,” said Sand Cranes coach Salim Muwonge.

This year’s AFCON tourney also acts as the qualification route for African teams to the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia.

In short, the finalists of AFCON – winners and runners-up – qualify to the World Cup; therefore, Uganda needs to beat Mozambique to reach the grand stage.

Uganda will fancy their chances against Mozambique who are also making their debut at the tourney.

However, Mozambique topped Group B when they beat Morocco 2-1 on Tuesday to reach the semi-finals in style, having won all their three Group B matches to top with maximum points.

Senegal and Morocco face off in the other semi.
