Preview – Troubled Jogoos Host Coachless Venoms In Last 8 Decider

SC Villa have a chance to renew some hope in what has been a trying season when they host Vipers SC in the second leg of their Uganda Cup quarter tie on Wednesday.

The Jogoos who have struggled both on and off the pitch can forget their misery if they eliminate Vipers from the cup and storm the semi-finals.

With threats of a lay-down-of-tools by the players who have only been paid a single month’s salary after a long time still existing, Edward Kaziba will be hoping that does not affect them come game time in Bombo.

After a trying start to the second round that saw Villa go nine games minus victory (D5 L4), they defeated Kyetume FC 1-0 heading into the cup tie and will be feeling confident that they can take care of the Venoms.

The win against the Slaughters was followed up with a spirited 1-1 draw away to Vipers in the first leg at Kitende, a game that saw Ronald Ssekiganda net a late header to level matters deep into additional time.

The celebrations both on and off the pitch clearly showed how much the cup means to Villa and they will be expected to do all they can not to exit it at home.

For Vipers, they start life without head coach Fred Kajoba who opted to move on Monday, May 31.

His assistant Paul Kiwanuka has reportedly taken over and will be the interim coach for the rest of the campaign.

Vipers got off to a good start early in the season but may see their campaign turn into disaster.

Currently third on the Uganda Premier League log, two point behind leaders Express with just four games to play, the Venoms may end a campaign that promised so much at the start, empty handed if they fail to negotiate past Villa.

Whether the abrupt departure of Kajoba will have adverse effects on the team remains to be seen but one thing for sure is that Vipers will go into the game desperate to seal a spot in the last four.

Striker Yunus Ssentamu who has netted 16 league goals so far will be the man the Venoms will look to for inspiration and will hope he can rediscover his scoring exploits after going two matches without scoring.

The Kitende based side defeated Villa 3-1 the last time they visited Bombo and will be confident they can inflict similar damage come Wednesday.

Match Stats

This will be the 26th meeting between the two sides since November 2010.

In the past 25 meetings, Vipers have won 12, Villa four with the other nine all ending in draws.

Vipers have already defeated Villa twice in the league this season including a 3-0 victory over the Jogoos at Kitende.

However the last meeting between them came in the cup, last week, and it ended in a 1-1 draw.

At home, the Jogoos are winless in their last five games against the Venoms (D2 L3). The last time Villa beat Vipers at home was in May 2017 in a league game from which they walked away 1-0 victors.

These two sides met in the Uganda cup semi-finals in 2018 with Vipers winning the tie 1-0 on aggregate.
