Onyango visits Cranes Camp, Rallies Youngsters and Goalkeepers

Former national team captain Denis Onyango has cheered up Uganda Cranes team ahead of their International friendly with Bafana Bafana in South Africa.

Onyango visited the Cranes camp on Tuesday in Roodepoort in South Africa before the team’s game on June 10 in Johannesburg.

The Sundowns goalkeeper expressed belief in the team’s rebuilding process.

“As a Ugandan supporter right now, it gives me joy to come and support the boys. They are part of my family because I have been on the National team for a very long time,” Onyango said in an interview with Journalist Grace Mbabazi.

“I had some few chats with the guys at FUFA and they allowed me to come and say hello to the boys and of course encourage them and let them know that its possible with a lot of new young boys I have seen and I believe that if they are building for the future its the right time they must give their best and start well on Thursday.”

He added: “Its very important for them to start on a very good note and that will help them build for the World Cup Qualifiers. There is no young person in football especially in National team.”

He talked with the goalkeepers (Ismael Watenga, Mathias Kigonya and Charles Lukwago). “That’s where I am more experienced, speaking to them first was intended. I have to remind them that for us to qualify to the next World Cup we have to keep as many clean sheets as possible. They must not do what Denis did but do what they must do and give their best. They are not impressing anyone, they have to do the job for the team and go to the next level.”

“They have the potential, I worked with Kigonya, and Lukwago for a very long time and also Watenga for the previous years and also when he was at Chippa we were also speaking. They should just take the chance and give the best to the nation.”

Onyango announced international retirement in April, putting an end to a glamorous 13-year career with Uganda Cranes.
