Mbabazi, Mbarara Send Kyetume Closer To Relegation

Wednesday, June 16
*Kyetume 1-3 Mbarara City

Kyetume FC’s hopes of remaining in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League suffered another significant blow after a home loss to Mbarara City FC.

Henry Kitegenyi brace and Hilary Mukundane freekick handed Mbarara City coach Livingston Mbabazi revenge against his former bosses.

Richard Matovu scored a consolation for the Slaughters in added minutes.

Four minutes in the second half, Solomon Okwalinga cut back pass from the byline beat Kyetume defence to find a well placed Kitegenyi who slotted home his second and the third for the visitors.

The players ran towards the corner flag, celebrated while portraying a group of people taking a nap – whether it was a mimick of Kyetume defence that was caught sleeping or sending the Slaughters back to bed (relegation) will be another day.

The damage was done before the break as Mbarara struck twice in the space of three minutes.

Nicholas Kasizi lost possession in his won half, Pistis Barenge poked it to Kitegenyi who lashed a ferocious effort with his left foot that eluded the keeper to find its way into the bottom corner in the 25th minute.

Captain Hilary Mukundane opened his account when he showed his strong muscle from free-kick, and his long range drive proved far from Martin Othieno’s reach.

Othieno, in goal for the first time this season, was minutes later taken for Emmanuel Were as coach Jackson Mayanja got him out of his misery.

Earlier, Kyetume had not put a foot wrong and looked to be in control of proceedings. Latif Kiyemba had a long range drive from the centre arc but his shot was slightly over Mohamed Ssekeba’s goal frame.

Relegation Becoming Reality For Kyetume

One win in seven games is not good enough for a side that wants to play in top flight next season.

Against Mbarara, Kyetume players did not handle the game with the respect it deserves.

They have collected 23 points from 27 games, and have played one more than relegation competitors Busoga United and Onduparaka FC.

Last season, they had collected 30 points in 25 games when the league was ended due to Covid19. They ended in 11th place but have since lacked that hunger that saw them flourish in their first season in top flight.

Kyetume visit Bright Stars on June 23, host Onduparaka three days later before making a trip to Vipers on the last day of the season.

Livingston Mbabazi Gets His Revenge

Livingston Mbabazi was sacked by Kyetume FC in March this year citing poor performance.

He left the club a non convinced man given the circumstances after personal clashes with then Technical Director Jackson Mayanja.

There were claims that Mayanja was interfering in Mbabazi’s workings and the two never went along.

This was Mbabazi who had returned at the club for the second time after his first spell when the club was in Big League.

However, just two wins from 10 games meant that Mbabazi had run out of excuses, with the last nail coming against Mbarara City at Kakyeka.

He had built a good foundation, letting the veterans like Robert Ssentongo, Patrick Ochan, Vincent Kayizzi go. He ushered in new guns like Ezra Bida, Latif Kiyemba, Steven Kabuye among others.

His sacking made him leave unfinished work, and the manner in which he was sacked left a big scar on his mind.

He was animated on the touchline, lowering his emotions with a coca-cola, and was later seen taking off his coat as the game progressed.

After that convincing victory at Nakisunga, the gaffer left Mukono a contented man. He paid them back in different currency.
