Rugby: Elgon Cup Postponed

The upcoming first leg of the 2021 Elgon Cup has been postponed due to escalating numbers of Covid19 infections, Uganda Rugby Union has confirmed.

Elgon Cup is competed for by Uganda and Kenya 15s teams every year home and away.

The first leg in Kampala was scheduled for June 26th 2021, and has been postponed.

The two teams did not face off last year due to Covid. When they last met in 2019, the Rugby Cranes won the first leg 16-13 in Kisumu but Kenya Simbas won 16-5 in Kampala to retain the trophy.

Uganda had started preparations for the competition with Brian Makalama and Robert Musinguzi assuming the coaching duties in absence of Robert Sseguya who is down to leukaemia.

Uganda, whose 7s team is in Paris for the Olympics repechage tournament, will now shift focus to ties against Ghana and Algeria in July in the Rugby Africa Cup.

The Elgon Cup is competed for by both the Men and Women national Rugby teams of Uganda and Kenya.

It is named after Mount Elgon which is a significance feature at the border of Kenya and Uganda. The men’s competition started in 2004 while the women’s Elgon Cup followed it a few years later, starting in 2006.

The cup is held over two legs. And the winner is chosen on an aggregate basis.  Each country hosts one leg.
